Ernakulam: The Forest Department has widened its probe into the incident involving the seizure of ambergris in Kochi, revealing the existence of more potential connections.
Ambergris is a solid, waxy flammable substance produced in the digestive system of sperm whales.
The ongoing investigation is now focusing on individuals who provided ambergris to the arrested suspects, Rahul and Vyshakh. During questioning, the accused revealed that a female friend from Chavakkad had supplied the ambergris, prompting further inquiry. The Kodanad Range has taken over the investigation from the Perumbavoor Flying Squad of the Forest Department.
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) team, acting on a tip-off last Saturday night, apprehended two individuals near a hotel in Kaloor’s Karukappilly area in possession of ambergris valued at Rs. 5 crore in the illegal market. The Forest Department has assumed control of the investigation from the DRI. The seized ambergris will undergo examination, and the arrested individuals, KN Vyshakh and N Rahul, will undergo comprehensive interrogation. The investigation team anticipates uncovering more information about the ambergris smuggling network’s aliases.
Reports suggest that ambergris smuggling is on the rise in the state, with numerous smuggling rings being dismantled in recent years, particularly in the northern regions. Ambergris is highly prized by perfume makers for its fixative properties, which allow fragrances to endure longer.
It is essential to note that under Section 51 of the Forest Act, 1972, the possession and trade of ambergris can lead to imprisonment for a period of three to seven years.
