It only took a few seconds for Shashi Tharoor to turn from a beacon of secularism to a bigot and a pro-Israeli advocate. The Congress leader is now learning the hard way that ‘secularism’ in Kerala has a whole together different meaning. In Kerala, killing of innocent women, children and elderly in cold-blood by Hamas is considered as ‘freedom struggle’ by communists and Islamic fundamentalists. Dubbing such a ‘freedom struggle’ as terrorism is a sin that will not be forgiven.
When the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), an ally of Congress, held a Palestine Solidarity rally in Kozhikode on October 26, an invitation was extended to Shashi Tharoor, whom they expected to deliver a great speech on the cruelty of Israeli bombardment of Gaza and the plight of the Palestinians.
Shashi Tharoor, as usual gave an eloquent speech for about half an hour. In his speech he delved deep in to the atrocities of Israel and the sufferings of Palestinians. However, he made a terrible mistake of referring to Hamas as terrorists who killed women and children.
Being a former Under-Secretary General of the United Nations, Tharoor, might have felt only natural to consider killing unarmed civilians as an act of terror. Tharoor for a few seconds thought that he was a ‘global citizen’ and forgot that he was in Kerala and speaking at a rally of the Muslim League. He let his inner conscious do the work for a few seconds and said that Hamas fighters were terrorists.
Thus ended Shashi Tharoor’s image of secularism in the eyes of Islamists and communists. All hell have broke loose and Shashi Tharoor has become a target of communist jihadi nexus. A prominent Muslim body even cancelled their invitation to Shashi Tharoor to be guest at a Palestine Solidarity meeting.
Muslim League leader, MK Muneer, who spoke after Tharoor, countered by saying that the British considered Bhagat Singh and Subhas Chandra Bose as terrorists. Though, one can ask whether Bhagat Singh and Subhas Chandra Bose had gone from house to house seeking women, children and elderly to kill them in cold blood, this is the logic that Islamists and communists are using in Kerala.
CPI(M) leader, M Swaraj, criticized Shashi Tharoor for supporting Israel. It must be noted that M Swaraj, just after the Hamas terror attack on October 7, had said that whatever cruelty that Palestinians do against Jews, they must be considered innocent.
It is chilling to think that in Kerala killing of innocent women, children and elderly is accepted with open arms. There are no discussions about the atrocities committed by Hamas terrorists and how they derailed the peace talks between Saudi Arabia and Israel and plunged the whole region into war.
Many reports have already come out detailing the brutality and inhumane acts committed by Hamas terrorists on innocent lives in Israel.
Though, Shashi Tharoor is a three-time MP from Thiruvananthapuram, it is only now that he is learning the real meaning of ‘secularism’ in Kerala.
