New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Transport has raised concerns over the rising number of road accidents in Kerala, which has ascended from the fifth to the third position among states with the highest road accident rates recorded in 2022. Tamil Nadu remains at the top of the list in this alarming category. According to the ministry’s report, road accidents in Kerala have surged by 31.87 percent compared to previous years.
In 2022, Kerala recorded a total of 43,910 road accidents, representing 9.5 percent of the nation’s total accidents. In the preceding years, Kerala had consistently held the fifth position in terms of road accidents, making this shift to the third spot all the more concerning.
Notably, in the last year, out of a total of 4.61 lakh road accidents across the country, 1.68 lakh individuals lost their lives, and 4.43 lakh suffered injuries. The report further highlights the grim statistics for Kerala, revealing that for every one lakh people in the state, 12 individuals lost their lives, and 138 people sustained injuries in road accidents.
Furthermore, the report underscores the impact of poor road conditions in Kerala, as it details that last year, one person lost life and 30 others were injured in 25 accidents attributed to potholes. Additionally, 5,510 accidents were recorded on curved stretches of roads. The report also sheds light on the fact that 38 people lost their lives in 305 accidents linked to road construction and other maintenance activities.
