Thiruvananthapuram: A report reveals that 69 police officers in Kerala have taken their lives over the past five years, with 12 police officers attempting suicide. These findings are part of a report compiled by the officials, prompted by a concerning rise in suicides within the service.
This statistic encompasses the period from January 2019 to September 2023, during which 32 Civil Police Officers, 16 Senior Civil Police Officers, eight Grade Sub-Inspectors, and one Inspector lost their lives.
Excessive workloads, intimidation from superiors, and personal family issues are the primary reasons behind most of these tragic deaths. In 2023 alone, five police officers attempted suicide until September. In 2020 and 2021, two officers took their lives each year, and in 2022, three policemen attempted suicide. Six of these officers were senior civil police officers, while the remaining were civil police officers.
