Thiruvananthapuram: A clash erupted during a Kerala Students Union (KSU) march to Higher Education Minister R. Bindu’s official residence in Thiruvananthapuram, where activists were protesting alleged irregularities in the election at Sree Kerala Varma College in Thrissur. To disperse the demonstrators, the police employed water cannons. During the ensuing lathicharge by the police, Nazia, a state executive member of KSU, suffered severe facial injuries, while Abhijith, a member of the KSU district committee, sustained a head injury.
KSU workers have accused the police of using force without provocation. In response to this activists blocked the road, destroyed flux boards of Keraleeyam event and blocked minister’s vehicles. KSU activists had protested against the minister yesterday as well. In response to these events, KSU has called for a statewide education bandh tomorrow.
A political row erupted in the Sree Kerala Varma College election, after KSU candidate Sreekuttan Sivadasan, a blind student ended the four-decade-long reign of SFI in the college by defeating its candidate in a neck to neck race. In an unexpected turn of events, SFI activists demanded a recount of votes. When the result of the recounting of votes was announced at mid-night SFI candidate was declared the winner by a margin of 11 votes. Following this, KSU started a protest alleging sabotage by SFI during the recounting of votes.
