Ernakulam: The Kerala High Court strongly criticized the state government for its extravagant expenditure on the Keraleeyam program, especially in the midst of a severe financial crisis that the state is currently grappling with. The criticism by the court follows a statement made by the Chief Secretary, acknowledging Kerala’s dire financial situation. The court told the government that the well-being of the people should take precedence over festive celebrations.
The High Court stated that even if a single citizen is undergoing hardship, the state should not divert its focus to celebratory events, and the ruling government need to grasp this reality.
The High Court came with this severe criticism against the state government while considering the petition against delaying the pension of KSRTC officials. The government has spent crores of rupees to organize Keraleeyam when salaries and pensions of government officials are delayed, supplies are not available in SupplyCo, there is a severe shortage of medicines in the state, and central projects are stalled due to non-receipt of state allocation. The criticism of the court comes at a time when people’s protests are intensifying against the Pinarayi government’s extravagance.
