New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has voiced significant apprehension regarding the rise of deep fake videos generated through Artificial Intelligence (AI). Emphasizing the risks associated with these manipulated digital media creations, he underscored the need for a comprehensive understanding of AI, as these technologies can be exploited to intentionally disseminate false information or harbour malicious intentions.
Speaking at the Diwali Milan program at the BJP Headquarters on Friday, Prime Minister Modi addressed the gathering, expressing concerns about the dangers posed by deep fakes in the realm of digital media. He urged journalists to play a crucial role in informing the public about the adverse effects of utilizing artificial intelligence to propagate harmful content, especially in cases involving the misrepresentation of individuals through deep fakes.
PM Modi shared a personal experience, stating, “I recently saw a video in which I was seen singing a Garba song. There are many other such videos online.” He highlighted the looming threat of deep fakes, emphasizing the potential for widespread issues they could create.
Deepfakes, designed to intentionally spread false information or with malicious intent, have the capacity to harass, intimidate, demean, and undermine individuals. Furthermore, they can contribute to misinformation and confusion on critical issues. In light of these concerns, Prime Minister Modi urged the media to take a proactive role in educating the public about the risks associated with deep fakes.
The government has already taken steps to address this issue, with the Centre imposing stringent penalties for the creation and circulation of deep fakes, including a Rs 1 lakh fine and a three-year jail term.
