MALAPPURAM: An instruction mandating school students’ attendance at the ‘Nava Kerala Sadas’ program, has sparked controversy. The instruction requires a minimum of 200 students from each school to attend the programme.
Yesterday, the Tirurangadi District Educational Officer (DEO) at Malappuram district convened a meeting for the Headmasters in the educational district regarding student participation in the ‘Nava Kerala Sadas.’
In light of the state’s insufficient audience for the ‘Nava Kerala Sadas’ programme, the Tirurangadi DEO conducted a meeting with school Headmasters, indicating that each Headmaster must bring a minimum of 200 students to the programme. However, before formalizing this as a written circular, the oral statement sparked controversy. During discussions, the DEO urged the Headmasters to select obedient and disciplined students for participation.
Subsequently, amidst the controversy, the DEO office clarified that the Officer had never imposed such a requirement. The DEO’s explanation stated that the meeting only concerned students interested in ‘science clubs’ and attendance was not compulsory. The discussion with the Headmasters aimed to ensure that attending students could align their academic pursuits with the socio-cultural aspects, the DEO’s office clarified.
