Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department issues rain warnings for several districts. The ongoing downpour is attributed to a cyclone situated in the inland region of Tamil Nadu, adjacent to Kerala.
The India Meteorological Department predicts that heavy rain will persist in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad districts today. Also, there’s a chance of a formation of whirlwind over the Andaman Sea by Saturday. It might turn into a low-pressure system, causing heavy rain to continue until Friday.
A red alert has been raised in Pathanamthitta, signaling the highest level of caution, while Thiruvananthapuram and Idukki have been issued orange alerts for heavy rain. Yellow alerts are in effect for Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad districts today. On Friday, Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Ernakulam, and Wayanad are also under yellow alert.
Thiruvananthapuram city is still facing heavy rainfall. Thiruvananthapuram Divisional Forest Officer, Mr. KI Pradeep Kumar IAS has informed that, due to the issuance of an orange alert issued by the District Collector, the Ponmudi, Kallar, and Mankayam Eco Tourism Centers will remain closed until further notice . Additionally, due to the continuous downpour, the Idukki-Nedumkandam Kallar Dam has been opened.
Meanwhile, Pathanamthitta is grappling with intense rainfall and flood. Many houses were damaged due to the heavy rainfall in Konni-Kokkathodu , and around 10 houses were affected and six families relocated to Kalanjoor. In Konni- Kokkathot area, a KSRTC bus encountered difficulties to operate due to waterlogging, and the crew was safely evacuated to a nearby house.
The Pathanamthitta District Collector has imposed restrictions on various activates. Activities such as Tourism ,Thozhilorappu (Rural employment guarantee scheme), kotta vanchi savari and boating are prohibited until the 24th. Travel restrictions are in place for hilly areas to minimise disaster risks, with a specific ban from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. However, exceptions are made for travel related to disaster relief and the Sabarimala pilgrimage. Considering the situation in the district, pilgrims are advised to prioritize safety and exercise caution when traveling to and from Sabarimala during the night.
