Thiruvananthapuram: A police report said that the fake voter’s ID cards were forged by Youth Congress leaders in a bid to win organizational election. The scanner is now on Rahul Mamkoottathil, who is the current president of the Youth Congress. The fake voter’s ID controversy came to public attention when it was found that forged ID cards were used to cast votes in the election of office bearers of the Youth Congress.
The Congress party in Kerala has two major groups – the ‘A’ group and ‘I’ group. Organizational elections in Congress party in Kerala usually witness highly charged moments between the two factions. While the ‘A’ group was earlier headed by AK Antony and the late Oommen Chandy, the ‘I’ group is led by Ramesh Chennithala.
The police said that the accused Youth Congress leaders forged the ID cards to secure a win for ‘A’ group in the Youth Congress election. Rahul Mamkoottathil is a leading member of the ‘A’ group. He has also admitted that he is close with the Youth Congress leaders who were arrested in creation of the fake ID cards.
The police have summoned Rahul Mamkoottathil on Saturday for questioning.
The BJP has taken up the issue seriously saying that the Congress leaders are trying to subvert the election process in the country by using fake voter’s ID cards. The State President, K Surendran, has written to the Election Commissioner and also to concerned authorities seeking their attention on this serious matter of creating fake voter’s ID. He said that the organizational election of Youth Congress was a precursor to the coming General Election hinting at the possibility of the grand old party using this illegal measure to subvert the elections.
