THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The University of Kerala has undertaken a significant curriculum revision in alignment with the new National Education Policy (NEP). Following Mahatma Gandhi (MG) University in Kottayam, the University of Kerala has also begun the process of revising its syllabus according to the NEP for the upcoming academic year.
As part of this initiative, the University of Kerala will organize workshops to revise the curricula of all the colleges affiliated with it. The implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 will introduce several key features, including the Multiple Entry and Exit System (MEES), Academic Bank of Credits (ABC), Internships, and Vocational Skill Courses.
Reports suggest that initially, 20 percent of the present syllabus will undergo revision. A syllabus committee panel comprising senior professors, industrial experts, and student representatives will soon be finalized to oversee this process.
The NEP emphasizes that education should not only focus on cognitive abilities but also on foundational capacities such as knowledge and proficiency, as well as higher-order intellectual abilities like critical thinking, problem-solving, social, ethical, and emotional aptitudes. The University of Kerala aims to implement these principles.
The first two semesters will involve a preliminary study of the core subjects, followed by more detailed study in the subsequent semesters. Exam evaluations will take place in the colleges, with the question papers prepared by the University.
The University has instructed the Board of Studies to include special academic workshops or seminars in each subject’s syllabus, featuring participation from international subject experts, including Nobel laureates. These sessions can be conducted either online or offline, providing students with a wide exposure to their core subject areas.
A two-day training program on the NEP will be provided to all teachers before April 2024. Additionally, the University plans to launch an online help center to address further queries.
In line with the NEP, the University of Kerala has announced the introduction of four-year degree programs starting from the upcoming academic year in June-July 2024.
