Thiruvananthapuram: The traffic signals at Plamoodu near Pattom were switched off. From morning huge traffic jam was observed on the road stretching from Pattom to PMG and back. The reason was, tar road near the traffic signals in Plamoodu were dug up, but the patches were left open. Hence the vehicles had to move cautiously not to cause any accidents. Some two-wheelers even fell because their bike wheels got caught in the dug-up patches on the road.
Thanks to the timely intervention of the traffic police personnels on duty, who, seeing this dangerous and congested situation, decided to temporarily fill the dug-up road themselves. By the time our Janam English team arrived, the officers—SI Harikumar, ASI Santhosh Kumar, and CPO Renjudath—had already filled the road patches with mud.
It is said that as part of the ‘smart city’ project, most of the traffic signal poles in the capital city are being reconditioned except for the newly installed ones. For this, new cables have to be pulled. And as a result the roads, which are already in a pathetic condition, are being dug up further causing problems for the commuters.
The Pattom Plamoodu road connecting to PMG is very close to Kerala Legislative Assembly. It is one of the high traffic area in Thiruvananthapuram city. The roads near the traffic poles were slit up last night, but the workers responsible for laying the cables did not cover the dug up road. As a result, many two-wheelers, unaware of the danger, lost balance and fell on the road.
Salute to the three traffic police personnels, for setting an example for others to follow, showing the public that the law enforcers are still dependable.
