Thiruvananthapuram: The Director of General Education S Shanavas is likely to submit a report to Education Minister V Sivankutty regarding the recent comments made by the Director General of Education, criticising the assertion that Kerala’s public education sector is improving citing the yearly increase in pass percentages. The Education Minister called for this report following the release of an audio recording where Shanavaz claimed that even students unable to read were being awarded A+ grades.
Shanavaz expressed criticism towards the grading system in public examinations, contending that assigning A+ grades to students who cannot read is unjust to the children. He clarified that his objection is not against students passing public exams but rather against awarding marks beyond 50 percent to children lacking basic reading and writing skills. The state government also took a stance against Shanavaz’s remarks, with the Education Minister emphasizing that Shanavaz’s views did not represent the government’s official position.
In response, the Teachers’ organization raised objections to the Education Minister’s decision to seek a report from the Department of General Education itself. Shanavaz’s controversial statement was made during a workshop conducted in preparation for SSLC question papers.
