Kottayam: The Finance Department has approved a sum of Rs 85 lakh for the renovation of the collector’s bungalow in Kottayam. The Public Works Department (PWD) has been excluded from this renovation project, and the responsibility has been delegated to Nirmithi Kendra. The allocated funds were intended for the renovation of the camp office, which has been operating efficiently within its current setup.
This renovation plan for the collector’s bungalow is originally part of the Smart Revenue Office scheme for the years 2023–24. A budget of 85 lakh rupees was sanctioned three months ago. Initially, the PWD was assigned the renovation task as per the scheme’s guidelines. But the instructions from the collector led to the exclusion of PWD from the project, granting the revenue department authority over the renovation work. The official order sanctioning this has recently been issued.
The collector himself took the initiative to avoid the Public Works Department. The Revenue Department justifies this action by citing numerous complications in awarding the contract to the PWD. They claim that if the construction is managed by Nirmithi Kendra, administrative processes will proceed more smoothly without complications in the paperwork. This financial assistance from the Finance Department comes at a crucial time amidst Kerala’s prevalent debt crisis.
