Thiruvananthapuram: The state government is reluctant to apply Central government proposal to abolish check posts at the borders. There are also allegations that such check posts are only for collecting money.
Two years ago, the Union Ministry of Transport issued an order to abolish motor vehicle check posts on the state borders. It was proposed to abolish the checkposts in September 2021 when all the transactions went online through the Parivahan website.
There are 22 vehicle inspectors, 70 assistant vehicle inspectors and 70 office attendants in 19 motor vehicle check posts in Kerala. Lakhs of rupees are spent on their salaries. With GPS, details of passing vehicles are available to the Motor Vehicle Department through CDAC. Therefore, the operation of checkposts only incurs additional costs.
The MVD officials says that the current check post staff should be transferred to the enforcement department. The four Deputy Commissioners of Kerala who had been appointed to conduct a study in this regard have given a report that the checkposts should be abolished. However, the border checkposts are still functioning. The allegation is that the purpose is to collect money.
The Idukki RTO had demanded that the Cumbummettu check post, which is opened only during the Mandalam season of Sabarimala, should be opened this year as well. But the Deputy Transport Commissioner of the Central Region said that it will not be possible due to the instructions of the Central Government.
