Thiruvananthapuram: As the final phase of construction at Vizhinjam port nears completion, the Central Government has unveiled ambitious plans for its future. The aim is to elevate Vizhinjam into a globally renowned port, rivaling the standards of transshipment ports like Singapore and Colombo.
Under the Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 initiative, the development of this project will unfold in several phases. The comprehensive master plan is slated for completion by 2025, followed by technical and economic feasibility reports by 2026. In the initial phase, a specialized agency will be appointed to draft the master plan, adhering to the guidelines outlined by the Union Ministry of Ports and Shipping’s Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision.
The port’s construction will take advantage of its natural depth of 20 meters from the sea, strategically positioned within 10 nautical miles or 18 kilometers from the international shipping lane. According to the Amrit Kaal Vision report, this location is a significant advantage for the port’s development. The port is expected to handle up to 200 containers per hour, complying with international standards. Additionally, each ship will be equipped with six cranes, facilitating rapid loading and unloading of containers.
