Thiruvananthapuram: BJP State President K. Surendran said that the investigation in the Vandiperiyar POCSO case was sabotaged due to the connection of the accused with the CPI(M). In the case where a six-year-old girl was raped and strangled to death, the State President expressed disappointment about the court’s decision to acquit the accused, Arjun, who is a DYFI activist. Considering the culprit’s party affiliation, the police adopted a soft approach from the very beginning. Surendran also alleged that the charge sheet was filed by omitting sections that could attract severe punishment.
The BJP President pointed out that the Chief Minister had stated in the Assembly that Arjun has no connection with any political organization. However, Surendran pointed out that the DYFI had informed that the culprit’s membership was canceled on the same day the accusations surfaced.
“The relatives of the murdered child are deeply saddened by the verdict. We have no answer to their tears. It is very sad that common people are denied justice while the image of Walayar girls remains a painful reminder,” said Surendran.
Simultaneously, the police stated that they will appeal against the POCSO court verdict against the accused. The court acquitted the accused, stating that the prosecution could not prove the murder and rape charges. Judge V. Manju of the Kattappana fast-track special court pronounced the verdict acquitting the accused. The verdict comes two years after the charge sheet was filed.
