Idukki: The scheduled opening of the Mullaperiyar Dam today has been cancelled due to decreased rainfall and reduced water flow. The reduced rainfall has led to a decrease in the volume of water being diverted to Tamil Nadu. Now it is limited to 250 cubic feet per second (cfs).
The heightened water flow led to an increase in the allocation of water to Tamil Nadu, but it has now been reduced to 2500 cfs. Presently, the dam’s water level is 138.55 feet.
Previously, an announcement indicated that Mullaperiyar Dam would be opened by 10 am in response to rising water levels caused by heavy rains. The Tamil Nadu authorities had decided to open the dam if the water level exceeded 142 feet. The Tamil Nadu Public Works Department had cautioned about a potential release of up to ten thousand cubic feet of water per second. As a precautionary measure, the district administration issued warnings to residents along the banks of the Periyar River.
Although there has been a reduction in rainfall across Kerala, water levels have surged due to ongoing rains in specific areas of Tamil Nadu, particularly those close to the dam’s catchment zone.
