Ernakulam: Dr. Ruwais, the accused in the suicide case of young doctor Shahana, has put forth a new argument before the High Court. During the hearing of his bail petition, Dr. Ruwais claimed that his arrest was in revenge for criticising the police’s handling of Dr. Vandana Das’s murder case.
Ruwais refuted the allegations of dowry demands, asserting that he had conveyed to Shahana his intention to marry her after she completed her PG course. According to Ruwais’s bail application, Shahana was unwilling to wait until then. He argued that the charge against him under the Dowry Prohibition Act would not stand.
Justice P Gopinath, presiding over the case, dismissed Ruwais’s statement, affirming that demanding dowry is a criminal offense. Previously, Ruwais’s bail application had been denied by the additional chief judicial magistrate court in Thiruvananthapuram. Following this, Ruwais has approached the High Court seeking bail.
