Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Legislative Assembly today witnessed protests from opposition benches on the issue of a suicide by a Non Resident Indian (NRI) businessman Sajan Parayil at Anthoor in Kannur district.
The house has been adjourned for the day because of the opposition protests. The opposition benches demanded that the Chairperson of Anthoor municipality, P. K. Shyamala be arrested for being responsible for the suicide of Sajan Parayil.
Sajan Parayil was denied ownership certificate of an auditorium he had built at a cost of Rs. 15 crore. The municipality is dominated by the communist party and the Chairperson is P.K. Shyamala who is the wife of senior CPI(M) leader, M.V. Govindan.
Sajan who made it well in Nigeria wanted to start something of his own at his home town. He decided to build an auditorium and rent it out. However, the municipality did not hand him the ownership certificate and it had really distressed the entrepreneur. After many attempts the result was the same. Disappointed that he would lose his hard earned money amounting to Rs. 15 crore, Sajan, committed suicide.
The suicide by an entrepreneur who had invested in Kerala has raised public outcry from the people against the government. The state is known for its anti-entrepreneurial attitude especially by the communist leaders and intellectuals.
Meanwhile, the High Court of Kerala has taken a suo motu case in the issue and has demanded the State government to submit a detailed report in court by 15 July.
