Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Government Medical Officers’ Association (KGMOA) has raised concerns over the escalating COVID-19 situation in the state, citing a critical shortage of health workers to manage the increasing number of patients. With the number of Corona virus cases on the rise, the KGMOA has emphasised the urgent need for more healthcare professionals to handle the crisis effectively. Despite having over 80,000 doctors practicing in Kerala, only eight percent of them are currently employed in government hospitals.
The association expressed deep concern that the shortage of doctors and nurses is exerting immense pressure on the healthcare system, making it challenging to provide timely and adequate care to patients. The KGMOA urged the government to address this issue seriously and take immediate measures. The usual one nurse per patient ratio has been affected in the ICU, with now only one or two nurses are taking care of all patients in the ICU.
The KGMOA pointed out that the shortage of health workers is making it difficult to diagnose and give necessary care to those patients with the virus. Healthcare workers are working really hard without enough food or rest, making the burden on the system even worse.
