Supplyco to hike grocery prices following government’s subsidy removal decision

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Supplyco has announced an imminent increase in prices for grocery products. Supplyco has stated that the price increase will occur due to the state government’s removal of subsidies on certain goods.

Supplyco is increasing the prices of 13 subsidized items. Supplyco also reported that the government made this decision to address the government’s financial crisis.

The proposal to raise prices at Supplyco will undergo consideration in the cabinet meeting scheduled for tomorrow. Previously, a three-member committee was appointed to analyze the subsidy rates for groceries.

Simultaneously, there has been prolonged pending payment of dues to Supplyco suppliers. Reports suggest that the government’s decision to withdraw subsidies on groceries aims to address this ongoing crisis.

But, at the same time, several Supplyco outlets are there without having listed subsidized products. On December 21, public protested and stopped an inaugural celebration by Thrissur Mayor MK Varghese and MLA P Balachandran of Supplyco Christmas Market at Thrissur. The public protested, demanded that the Supplyco Christmas Market should only be inaugurated only after the goods arrive at the store. The public expressed discontent, stating that namesake ceremonial inaugurations for publicity should be avoided.

The rise in Supplyco’s prices will likely cause a significant overall market price surge, greatly impacting Kerala’s residents in the coming days. However, the Kerala government is facing criticism for overlooking public issues while allocating funds to various programs, including the extravagant ‘Nava Kerala Sadas’ campaign.
