Ernakulam: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) intensifies its probe into the Karuvannur Cooperative Bank scam, set to question 12 additional CPI(M) leaders, including district and state leaders. Summons have been issued to these leaders as part of the ongoing second phase of the investigation.
Scheduled for this week and the next, the interrogations will initially focus on individuals with knowledge of the secret accounts held by the CPI(M) in Karuvannur Bank. Those who allegedly exerted pressure on the bank management committee to secure benami loans will also be subjected to questioning.
Meanwhile, CPI(M)Thrissur District Secretary MM Varghese underwent four rounds of questioning by the ED and was subsequently released. Despite leaders, including MM Varghese, denying direct involvement and awareness of the secret accounts, the ED has uncovered that the party maintained Rs 72 lakhs across five accounts in Karuvannur Bank. Transactions exceeding Rs 50 lakhs have been traced through these accounts, prompting the ED to suspect the existence of additional undisclosed accounts linked to the party in the same bank. Investigations into these accounts are ongoing.
