Kannur: The sewage treatment plant, built at Padanapalam in Kannur as part of the central government’s AMRUT project, is set to be inaugurated. The project, with a total cost of Rs 27.03 crores, will have the capacity to treat 10 lakh liters of sewage water per day. The treated water can be used for agricultural, construction, and non-domestic purposes, as stated by the Corporation Mayor.
The issue of sewage discharge from residential, commercial, and industrial sources posing environmental and health hazards has prompted the construction of this plant. Kannur city’s wastewater primarily flows into Padanathodu (river), and it will find a permanent solution through this initiative. The comprehensive sewage system and treatment plant were included in the AMRUT project for this purpose.
The inauguration ceremony is scheduled to take place at 2 pm today, chaired by Mayor Adv. T O Mohanan and inaugurated by Minister MB Rajesh. However, there are allegations that the haste in inaugurating the plant is an attempt to portray it as the corporation’s independent project. Despite more than half of the project’s funding being provided by the central government, concerns have been raised about the attempt to present it as a solely corporation-funded initiative.
