Ernakulam: The Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC) has come out heavily against Minister Saji Cheriyan for insulting Christian community leaders for attending the feast hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Christmas day. KCBC spokesperson, Father Jacob Palackappilly said sarcastically that only this much is expected from the Minister. He also added that it is not the political parties which decide what politics Christians should adopt.
Father Jacob Palackappilly also reminded that Minister Saji Cheriyan had to keep away from the Ministerial post for insulting the Constitution. He also remarked mockingly that the Minister comes from a school of thought where they use certain words to address people in high positions. Therefore, only this much is expected from the Minister, the KCBC spokesperson quipped.
Father Palackappilly also warned that Saji Cheriyan’s statement has not gone down well with the Christian community in Kerala.
He said that the Prime Minister had invited the Christian community leaders for the feast in recognition of the service that the Christian community has provided to the nation. There is no need to see politics in it. The Christian denominations cannot take a negative stand on it. The decision of the Christian community to attend the feast hosted by the PM shows the responsibility of the community to the nation.
Cultural Minister, Saji Cheriyan, had insulted the Bishops who attended the Christmas feast hosted by the Prime Minister. The minister said that the Bishops were exhilarated when they were invited to the feast. The Bishops forgot everything when they drank the grape wine and ate the cake during the feast.
The minister’s irresponsible statement has enraged the KCBC and has resulted in the harsh backlash from the Christian body.
