ERNAKULAM: A complaint has been lodged against Minister Saji Cheriyan for his controversial remarks insulting Christian community leaders. Advocate Harish Kattoor, Alappuzha district convener for BJP Legal Cell, filed a complaint against Kerala’s Cultural Affairs Minister, Saji Cheriyan, for delivering insulting speech that denigrated Christian Bishops. The complaint was submitted to the Alappuzha District Superintendent of Police.
The complaint alleges that the Minister’s remarks incited religious rivalry against the bishops. Consequently, the petitioner demands the filing of charges under IPC 153 A, against the Minister for his seditious remarks.
Following Saji Cheriyan’s statement, the Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC) strongly criticized political parties, asserting that they should not dictate which political affiliations Christians should adopt or support.
Yuhanon Mar Diascoros, Head of the Orthodox Syrian Church in Kottayam, mentioned that they would attend the Prime Minister’s banquet if invited, without needing permission from anyone. He further stated that if someone speaks about Christians without understanding them, it is their own fault.
The BJP Minority Morcha staged a protest against Saji Cheriyan in his constituency, Chengannur, demanding his resignation. Members also burned an effigy of Saji Cheriyan during the protest.
Saji Cheriyan insulted the Bishops who attended the Christmas feast hosted by the Prime Minister, stating that the Bishops got goosebumps when they drank grape wine and ate cake during the event. The Minister has now withdrawn the controversial statement after facing severe backlash from various corners.
