THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : The Thiruvananthapuram Museum Police again issued a notice to a news reporter from the TV channel ‘24 News’ for questioning regarding their news reporting of the Mahila Morcha protest in Thiruvananthapuram.
Jayasankar, a news reporter at 24 News, has been summoned to appear before the Thiruvananthapuram Museum Police on January 10, 2024.
The Museum Police Sub-Inspector, Ajith Kumar R, issued the notice to the news reporter under CrPC section 41 A. The incident reported in the news took place on December 16. BJP’s Mahila Morcha activists staged a protest at DGP Sheikh Darvesh Sahib’s residence in Thiruvananthapuram, citing the police department’s failure to investigate the Vandiperiyar rape case. The reporter was called in for questioning regarding the news reporting.
Earlier, similar notices were issued to Janam TV news reporter Reshmi Karthika, cameraman Nithin Raj, and Janmabhumi photographer Anil Gopi for reporting the same news. Then, the Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) and Trivandrum Press Club to condemn the police action against journalists. Both associations strongly emphasized that the police action was an attempt to cover up the police department’s failure to handle the protest. The association expressed their concerns over the press freedom in Kerala.
Several BJP leaders also commented that the encroachment on media freedom and misuse of police power in a democratic country is unjust.
The issuance of a notice by the police in this situation has sparked controversy once again.
