Kottayam: Farmers in Kottayam district are facing a hurdle in commencing ‘puncha’ farming due to delayed payments from the Supplyco. for procured paddy. Despite the procurement of paddy from farmers, the Supplyco. has not disbursed the payments, causing distress among the agricultural community. Farmers in Aymanam, Arpookara, Thalayazham, Kallara, Neendoor, and Kumarakom panchayats of Kottayam district are yet to receive payment for paddy collected in October and November.
Many farmers, who initiated farming with loans, are now facing a one-month delay in starting ‘puncha’ farming due to the payment delays. In response to the pending payments, farmers are mobilising for a strike scheduled in front of the Kottayam Supplyco. office on January 10 if their dues are not settled. The Supplyco. has not provided a clear timeline for the disbursement of funds, leaving farmers in a state of uncertainty.
