Alappuzha: A Mumbai-based businessman has stepped forward to assist the family of the paddy farmer, KG Prasad, from Thakazhi in Kuttanad, who took his own life due to a financial crisis. The businessman, preferring to remain anonymous, has settled the outstanding dues with the bank, preventing the threat of foreclosure on the family’s property. He revealed that the financial support was intended as a wedding gift for actor and BJP leader Suresh Gopi’s daughter.
The timely intervention occurred after Prasad’s wife, Omana, received a forfeiture notice from the Kerala State Development Corporation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes yesterday. In August 2022, Prasad’s wife, Omana, borrowed a self-employment loan (NMDFC) of Rs 60,000 from the same corporation. While a partial repayment of Rs 15,000 was made, the remaining amount faced an 11-month delay. The notice specifies that failure to settle the outstanding sum within a five-day period will result in the confiscation of their house and yard, spanning five cents.
KG Prasad had committed suicide because he did not get a loan to start farming. Despite repaying a previous agricultural loan through a one-time settlement scheme in 2021, Prasad faced rejection when applying for a new loan. After the incident gained public attention and became a matter of controversy, promises of assistance were made by ministers, yet no support was provided to the family. It was then that the Mumbai-based businessman extended a helping hand to reduce their financial burdens.
