Kochi: The Kerala High Court issued a stern warning to the police officers, emphasising the principles of democracy and the importance of treating citizens with respect. The court reminded law enforcement officials that in a democratic society, the people are sovereign and no one is above anyone else.
Justice Devan Ramachandran delivered the reminder in light of a specific incident where a sub-inspector at the Palakkad Alathur police station allegedly behaved rudely towards a lawyer. The court expressed concern over the disrespectful behaviour exhibited by some police officers, stating that such an approach is acceptable only in cinemas.
The incident in question involved Sub-Inspector VR Rineesh, who reportedly misbehaved with Adv. Aqueeb Suhail when he visited the police station with a court order to release a vehicle that was involved in an accident. Videos capturing the incident surfaced on social media. The lawyer then filed a contempt petition in the High Court against SI Rineesh.
During the court proceedings, Justice Devan Ramachandran directed the police to refrain from using disrespectful language when addressing citizens. The court also urged authorities to reissue a circular to reinforce proper behaviour and prevent instances of police misconduct.
The Director General of Police (DGP) informed the court that SI VR Rineesh had been given a warning and transferred as an initial response to the incident. Further action will be taken based on the outcome of a departmental investigation. The case is scheduled for another hearing on February 1.
