Thiruvananthapuram: National Highway (NH) 66 is poised to transform into Kerala’s first signal-free roadway. Stretching across a distance of 603 kilometers, the six-lane highway will extend from Thalappady in Kasaragod to Kazhakoottam in Thiruvananthapuram.
To achieve this feat, the project includes the construction of footpaths and an extensive network of underpasses, with some areas featuring up to three underpasses within a single kilometer. Over 400 underpasses are slated for construction, strategically connecting major locations and providing pedestrians with footpaths. This infrastructure design aims to enhance safety and reduce accidents significantly.
Unlike traditional medians, the six-lane highway will be divided by jersey barriers, a move that not only ensures road safety but also minimizes space requirements and costs. Medians typically demand a width of 60 meters, whereas the jersey barrier’s slender 0.61-meter profile proves to be a space-efficient alternative. The barrier’s installation not only aids in reducing the risk of accidents but also mitigates vehicle damage and passenger injuries in the event of a collision. Upon completion of the road construction project, commuters can anticipate a seamless journey from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram in just seven hours.
