Thrissur: An investor in the Karuvannur cooperative bank in Thrissur sought permission for mercy killing. Joshi (53), a native of Mapranam in Thrissur district, approached Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the Kerala High Court Chief Justice, seeking permission for mercy killing as he had no other means to live. He made this move because all his savings were deposited in the Karuvannur Cooperative Bank, and he was unable to retrieve his deposits.
In his petitions, Joshi appealed to the CM and the Chief Justice of Kerala High Court to urgently intervene in the issue, either to resolve it or give permission to end his life on January 30. He mentioned in his letter that his family’s entire savings were deposited in the Karuvannur cooperative bank, and despite filing complaints with various authorities when the money was not returned, there was no result.
Pointing to his deteriorating health condition, Joshi mentioned that he had undergone 21 surgeries in the last 20 years. The letter also highlighted the family’s financial crisis, affecting basic expenses, children’s education, and his treatment.
Joshi approached the cooperative bank several times to withdraw his deposited amount, but the CPI(M), which controls the cooperative bank, mistreated him. In this situation, Joshi stated that there is no other option than mercy killing.
Joshi mentioned that he filed a complaint against the cooperative bank during the CM’s ‘Nava Kerala Sadas’ programme on December 6, 2023, but it went in vain.
He added that he and his family members had around Rs 90 lakh deposited in the Karuvannur cooperative bank. Despite receiving only a small amount by several times, more than Rs 70 lakh remains to be retrieved from the cooperative bank.
Joshi demanded the full amount for treatment and living expenses, but the cooperative bank refused.
