Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Home Ministry decided to continue providing security to the Governor even though the central forces have taken over the security details of the Governor. The Home Ministry has also given orders to the police chief on this regard.
The move by the state government is seen as a bid to stave off further embarrassment over police failure to provide security to the Governor.
The unprecedented standoff, yesterday, between Kerala Governor, Arif Mohammed Khan and the Chief Minister had garnered national attention. The SFI’s attack on Governor’s convoy forced him to get out of his car to confront the attackers. He began a protest by the roadside against the lapse and inefficiency of the Kerala police in providing him security cover.
The Governor also complained to the Central Government, which took immediate action and sanctioned to provide Z plus category security to the Governor.
However, the Kerala state government is now in a fix after the Central forces took up the security details of the Governor. As the government is facing national embarrassment over yesterday’s incident, removing the Kerala police from the security detail of the Governor will put the government in a more defensive position. Yesterday’s standoff was widely covered by national media and the state government does not want further embarrassment.
If the State government withdraws Kerala police from the security detail, it would mean that the Kerala police have failed completely in providing security to the head of the state. This would directly make the Chief Minister look weak and inefficient as the Home Ministry is controlled by him.
A thirty-member CRPF team had arrived at the Raj Bhavan, yesterday, after Z plus category was given to the Governor by the central government.
