Idukki: A portion of the protection wall surrounding the Santhanpara Area Committee Office of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI (M)] in Idukki has been demolished. The move comes after a finding by the Revenue Department that the wall was built by encroaching on “poramboke” land (unassessed lands owned by the government).
The controversy surrounds the construction of the Santhanpara party office, in the name of CPI (M) Idukki District Secretary CV Varghese, situated on eight cents of land. An application for the No Objection Certificate (NOC) to complete the building’s construction was submitted but was rejected by the district collector.
In response to the NOC application, a survey was conducted at the site, revealing that 12 sq m of the building was constructed without a valid title deed. Additionally, it was discovered that the party was in possession of 48 sq m of land, belonging to the road on ‘poramboku’ land. The Santhanpara party office is located along the Kumily-Munnar highway.
In light of the survey findings, the Revenue Department has issued instructions to acquire the ‘poramboku’ land under the Land Conservancy Act. With this, CPI (M) workers demolished a portion of the protection wall that was identified by the Taluk Surveyor as built by encroaching on government land.
