Ernakulam: The Kerala High Court criticized the Director General of Police (DGP), Dr Shaik Darvesh Saheb for stating in court that the misconduct of police towards the public is due to their mental stress. This statement by the DGP was made during a contempt of court petition related to a Sub-Inspector’s misbehavior towards a lawyer in Alathur.
The court condemned DGP’s statement and said that everyone who works on the streets has mental stress, but that is not a license to misbehave. The High Court also directed, the court be informed as to how the circular issued on the conduct of the policemen is being implemented.
The DGP had recently issued an order for the policemen to behave politely with the public. This order of the DGP was issued following the intervention of the High Court. The order states that police personnel of all ranks working in the police department are constitutionally and legally obligated to treat the public with respect and speak politely.
The DGP later informed the court that a departmental inquiry is underway against the SI in the case of misbehavior with the lawyer.
