Thiruvananthapuram: The Forest and Wildlife Minister, AK Saseendran, expressed shock over the death of Thanneer Komban, the wild elephant captured in Mananthavady. In response to the incident, Minister Saseendran announced a collaborative effort between Kerala and Karnataka for the post-mortem examination. Additionally, he emphasized the initiation of a high-level inquiry into the matter. The minister assured transparency in the procedures and informed that a team of veterinary surgeons would soon arrive at Bandipur for further investigation.
Thanneer Komban, the elephant that had instilled fear in Mananthavady town, died on Saturday morning after being tranquilized and relocated to Bandipur forest in Karnataka. The transportation took place on Friday night, with a significant presence of police, forest officials from both states, and members of the Rapid Response Team (RRT). Thanneer Komban was released into Bandipur forest around 2:30 am on Saturday.
Reports indicate that Thanneer Komban had been administered two tranquilizer darts within a span of 20 days. Furthermore, the elephant had a severe injury and swelling on one of its legs. The exact cause of death is expected to be determined only after a thorough examination.
