Kochi: The issuance of driving licences and registration certificates (RC) has come to a standstill in the state, affecting 7.5 lakh individuals awaiting these documents. The root cause of this delay is the government’s failure to clear pending dues amounting to eight crore rupees owed to the contract company responsible for printing these documents.
Apart from this, the postal department is also grappling with outstanding dues of Rs 3 crore for delivering documents, including driving licences and RC books, to vehicle owners.
The crisis began in November, when the printing of driving licences was halted. Subsequently, in the following week, the production of RC books was also suspended. This problem not only affects individuals awaiting their licences but also disrupts the timely issuance of permits and the scheduling of driving tests.
Vehicles engaged in interstate services are also experiencing difficulties due to the unavailability of essential documentation. The crisis is further compounded for older vehicles seeking fitness certificates, as older documents produced in the Regional Transport (RT) office are not being replaced with new PVC cards promptly.
