Thrissur: Renowned poet and literary critic NK Desam, also known as N Kuttikrishna Pillai, passed away on Sunday night at the age of 87 in his hometown of Aluva’s Desom. Born in 1936, NK Desam embarked on his literary journey at the age of 12.
In 1973, he made his debut with the publication of ‘Anthimalari,’ his inaugural collection of poems. Over the years, he enriched the literary world with notable works such as ‘Kanyahridyam,’ ‘Ullegam,’ ‘Apoopanthadi,’ ‘Chottayile Sheelam,’ ‘Pavizhamalli,’ and ‘Elimeesa.’
NK Desam received recognition for his literary contributions, including the prestigious Edasseri Award in 1982 for ‘Ullegam.’ His accolades extended to the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award, Odakuzhal Award, and Sahodaran Ayyappan Award.
Beyond his literary pursuits, NK Desam was an employee of the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC). His academic background included a graduation in Economics from UC College and an MA in Malayalam.
NK Desam is the son of Narayana Pillai and Ammukutty Amma, and he was married to Leelavathi Amma. His children, Biju K, Balu K, and Aparna K.
