Thiruvananthapuram: The Minister for Food and Civil Supplies in Kerala, GR Anil, expressed dissatisfaction with the Kerala state budget presented by the Finance Minister, KN Balagopal, on February 5th, for the 2024-25 financial year. The Minister is dissatisfied because the current budget has not allocated the required amount to essential departments, including Supplyco. He said this situation might cause a surge in essential food prices, including rice.
GR Anil Kumar stated that the food department should be a priority in the state budget. He emphasized that the food department is facing a significant crisis and the budget should allocate more funds to address it. He clarified that while he is not making any public statements, the current situation suggests there may be a surge in rice prices in Kerala.
Anil Kumar also mentioned that, as the concerned Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, he will initiate discussions to address these issues.
He explained that usually, Ministers of respective departments inform the government about their department’s requirements. However, the food public distribution sector in Kerala, particularly Supplyco, is currently facing a major crisis.
Anil Kumar emphasized that as the Minister for food, it is his duty to address these issues to meet the public’s needs. Anil Kumar highlighted that the Kerala budget did not allocate funds for market intervention and for repaying Supplyco’s debt.
