Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has restored the electricity connection at Vellayani Devi Temple following the settlement of dues by the Travancore Devaswom Board. The temple had been without electricity for nearly 24 hours until the payment was made. The decision to clear the outstanding amount came after heightened protests by Hindu organizations.
The arrears amounted to approximately Rs.1lakh, with Monday being the deadline for payment. The electricity connection was disconnected by Nemom KSEB office employees around 11 o’clock the previous morning due to non-payment.
Initially, temple authorities argued that the dues were not the responsibility of the Devaswom Board but were to be covered by the advisory committee associated with last year’s Kaliyoottu festival ( a festival at the Vellayani Devi Temple which happens once in every three years and celebrated over a two-month period). However, as protests escalated, the Devaswom Board ultimately settled the bill, leading to the restoration of electricity at the temple.
