New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Kerala over the week.

The IMD has given a red alert in Idukki and Malappuram districts for 18 July. A red alert will be effective in Idukki, Malappuram, Kannur, and Wayanad districts on 19 July.

The weather forecasting agency has also said that there will be heavy downpour in Thrissur, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Malappuram on 20 July.

The IMD has warned fishermen not to go to sea during the period as the weather will be adverse and not safe for them.

Kerala had faced its worst floods in its history last year. Many parts of Kerala suffered severe hardships as rain fell incessantly over months without end.

However, the state government failed to manage the opening of dams in a time bound manner and it led to opening of the dams simultaneously. This led to unprecedented water flooding towns, cities, and villages. Many houses, businesses and vehicles were damaged across the state.

The collective effort of the people and the huge flow of help from across the world helped Kerala limp back into normalcy. One of the biggest help came from the fisher folk of Kerala who came to rescue the trapped population using their sea going boats.

This year Kerala witnessed lower than expected rainfall till date. As water levels in dams begin a downward slide, the government is planning to begin half hour power cuts to save electricity.
