Thiruvananthapuram: Despite Kerala grappling with severe financial crisis, the LDF government of Kerala is keen on spending more, than thinking of ways to repair the incurred losses through various projects and schemes. The Kerala government has now unveiled plans to bolster the strength of its police force. The state authorities are poised to invest Rs 1.87 crore in acquiring essential equipment, including grenades, to effectively manage and contain violent demonstrations.
These items, including tear gas shells, stun grenades, and other crowd dispersal tools, are slated to be purchased from the Gwalior unit of BSF, with quantities reaching 2,500 each. 200 movable barricades will be acquired at a cost of Rs 55.20 lakh, while 1,125 fiber shields manufactured by Fin Enterprises in Delhi will be purchased at a cost of Rs 12.97 lakh. This decision is an increase from the initial plan of acquiring 900 shields.
Furthermore, stating the need to ensure the safety of police personnel amid heightened risks, the government will invest Rs 24.21 lakh to procure safety helmets equipped with frontal metal shields. This move comes in response to widespread complaints regarding inadequate protective gear, particularly during confrontations with protesters.
Recent incidents in Kerala have highlighted clashes between protestors and police, marked by allegations of police brutality. It includes instances of the use of water cannons and tear gas against peaceful demonstrators. Concerns have been raised over the treatment of female protestors, with reports of male officers dragging them along roads. The Chief Minister’s labelling of these actions as ‘saving lives’, has drawn criticism amidst growing public discontent.
