Ernakulam: Many elderly individuals in Kerala are protesting due to the suspension of welfare pensions for several months. Incidents such as an elderly couple’s placard expressing readiness for mercy killing and a 90-year-old woman’s protest in the middle of the road have hit the headlines. Meanwhile, Minister Saji Cherian popular for delivering controversial statements, was seen insulting them all.
Minister Saji Cherian, in a disparaging statement, criticized 90-year-old Ponnamma, who protested in the middle of the road in Karuppupalam, Idukki, stating that her protest was futile as there are no funds available to give her. He was talking to a private media. The remarks sparked criticism against the minister. Previously, Saji Cherian had to resign for insulting the Constitution.
The suspension of welfare pensions for more than five months in the state has led to widespread discontent. In protest, Ponnamma, a resident of Karuppupalam, Vandiperiyar, staged a demonstration by sitting on a chair in the middle of the road, the day before yesterday. Subsequently, police intervened and persuaded her to return home.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister and the Ministers are adopting a extravagant attitude, blaming the center for the situation.
