Palakkad: Citing the non-disbursement of welfare pension in Kerala, elderly people staging protests has become a regular incident in Kerala. The latest of such a protest was reported in Palakkad where, two elderly women staged a protest against the Kerala government’s neglect towards pensioners .
The protest took place today in front of the Akathethara Panchayath Office in Palakkad district. A 92-year-old woman named Padmavathy and her daughter Indira (67) are reported to be protesting by placing a cot in front of the Panchayath Office. Their demand is that the Kerala government should disburse the welfare pension on time without betraying the needy people. They began their protest today morning before the Panchayath officials arrived at the office.
The mother-daughter duo stated that they have not received the social welfare pension for the last 6 months and emphasized that they have no other means to live. They also affirmed that they would not stop the protest against the Kerala government until a solution to the issue is obtained.
Just two months ago, on November 8, 2023, Mariyakutty and Annakutty, elderly women from Idukki district, staged a protest in Adimaly, holding a begging pot, and claimed that the Kerala government had forced them into a situation of begging, which garnered national attention. Despite mounting protests against the Pinarayi government citing failures in administration, the government is not considering the demands of opposition leaders and BJP leaders to avoid extravagant expenditures. Opposition leader VD Satheesan criticized the Pinarayi government for blaming the central government to conceal the state government’s corruption, extravagance, and mismanagement.
