Thiruvananthapuram: The Communist Party of India (CPI) has strongly opposed the Kerala government’s decision to permit foreign universities to operate within the state, asserting that it contradicts the left-wing policy. The budget announcement advocating for the inclusion of foreign and private universities to enhance the higher education sector was met with disagreement from the CPI. Criticism was voiced during the CPI executive meeting, where it was emphasized that the decision was made unilaterally without consulting or discussing with the Left Front or considering leadership input.
The CPI(M), which had earlier opposed the UGC regulation of 2023 permitting foreign university campuses in Bharat, has now extended invitations to foreign universities in Kerala. The government’s initiative includes offering concessions across various fields to attract foreign institutions. This move by the government has raised eyebrows, especially considering the earlier stance against such measures.
The decision has also faced opposition from left student organizations. The All India Students Federation (AISF) has strongly stated that the government should refrain from establishing private universities. AISF warned of initiating a strike if the government does not retract its declaration. Meanwhile, SFI has voiced concerns about the entry of foreign universities into Kerala and does not support the move.
