Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Legislative Assembly has enacted strict laws to combat the issue of garbage disposal in public spaces. Under the newly passed Kerala Panchayat Raj (Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Kerala Municipality (Amendment) Bill, 2024, severe penalties will be imposed on offenders.
Under the newly passed bills, individuals caught disposing of garbage in public spaces face fines of up to Rs 50,000 and imprisonment for up to one year. Additionally, the Secretary of Local Self-Government now possesses the authority to levy fines up to Rs 5,000 against those found guilty of littering.
The bills also mandate fines ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000 for those who do not segregate waste before disposal, while commercial establishments found guilty of dumping or burning garbage may be penalised up to Rs 5,000. Moreover, severe penalties will be imposed on those who discharge sewage into roads, water bodies, sewers, or public places, with fines escalating up to Rs 50,000. Fines ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000 and imprisonment of six months to one year will be imposed on individuals found guilty of polluting water bodies.
