Thiruvananthapuram: The National Teachers’ Union has strongly criticized writer B Jeyamohan for his recent comments describing Sanskrit language as ‘dirty’ at the Mathrubhumi International Festival of Letters (MBIFL). According to PS Gopakumar, President of the National Teachers’ Council, Jeyamohan’s remarks exposes his ignorance about the rich literary heritage of Sanskrit.
Gopakumar highlighted the fact that numerous ancient poets, including Valmiki, Vyasa, Bhasa, Magha, and Kalidasa, have composed their masterpieces in Sanskrit. He questioned how a literary figure like Jeyamohan could label such a language as “dirty.”
The National Teachers’ Union president pointed out that epic poems have been composed in Sanskrit. He stated that Jeyamohan’s statement stems from his ignorance about these timeless literary works transcending boundaries of time, geography, and language. He criticized Jeyamohan’s apparent ignorance, asserting that Sanskrit, meaning “purified,” is far from being described as “dirty.” He asserted that such statements only reflect poorly on Jeyamohan’s own standing in the literary community, portraying him as someone seeking attention through futile and meaningless statements.
Gopakumar also recalled Jeyamohan’s previous controversial statement regarding women writers, where he claimed they gain attention through gimmicks rather than genuine skill, a statement that Jeyamohan later retracted. PS Gopakumar remarked that Jeyamohan’s recent comment on Sanskrit only serves to confirm his previous observation regarding women, reflecting his unchanged stance.
