Thiruvananthapuram: In the wake of the challenging financial situation faced by the government, obtaining a driving licence may become more difficult in Kerala. A proposal has been put forth for driving schools to set up their testing grounds, along with the implementation of a new driving test system scheduled to commence from May 1. The reform primarily targets the test for light motor vehicles, encompassing cars and other small vehicles.
Under the new system, significant modifications will be introduced to the driving test procedure. Instead of the conventional wire and ribbon setup, candidates have to drive through a tarred or concrete path. The test will include activities such as angular parking, parallel parking, zigzag driving, stopping on a slanted road, and starting the vehicle without moving backward.
The proposal for driving schools to find their testing grounds is in the name of alleviating the financial burden on the government. Currently, the Kerala Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) has ten testing stations, with additional locations including various grounds and outlying land, including playgrounds and areas near places of worship, being used for driving tests. Many driving schools argue against the proposal, preferring the government to allocate land for testing grounds instead.
