Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a high-temperature warning for several districts in the state, with a yellow alert declared in eight districts. The districts under the yellow alert include Kollam, Kottayam, Palakkad, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, and Kannur.

According to the IMD, today and tomorrow (February 21 and 22, 2024), Kollam, Kottayam, and Palakkad districts are expected to experience maximum temperatures of 37°C, while Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, and Kannur districts will witness maximum temperatures of 36°C. These temperatures are 2-3 °C above normal.

In response to the heightened risk of sunstroke, the state has reorganized the working hours of individuals exposed to the sun. The Labour Commissionerate has issued an order to restructure working hours until April 30. As per the new arrangement, working hours for individuals in the sun have been set from 7 am to 7 pm, with a break for rest from 12 pm to 3 pm.

For those on a shift system, the arrangement includes a break from 12 pm to 3 pm, with shifts resuming thereafter. Special teams, overseen by the District Labor Officer, Deputy Labor Officer, and Assistant Labor Officer, will conduct daily inspections to ensure compliance with the new regulations.
