Thrissur, Kerala: K Surendran, the BJP State President, voiced concerns over the politicization of Kerala Kalamandalam, stating that it should not be transformed into a political hub similar to Pakistan. Addressing the media in Thrissur, Surendran emphasized that excessive political involvement has hindered the growth of the artistic community within the institution, which holds immense potential.
Surendran highlighted Kalamandalam’s role in providing opportunities for artists nationally and internationally, especially in preserving ritual arts on the brink of extinction. He lauded the Narendra Modi government for creating opportunities for students in various pilgrimage and cultural centers across the country. However, Surendran lamented that Kalamandalam has become subject to political interference, alleging that politicians dictate its operations according to their wish.
Earlier, left-wing writer NR Gramaprakash had also raised criticisms against the governing body of Kerala Kalamandalam. Gramaprakash, through his Facebook post, expressed dissatisfaction with the institution’s management under the leadership of Mallika Sarabhai, distancing himself from the ongoing issues. He stated that Kalamandalam is in a new era under the leadership of Mallika Sarabhai and he has no part in what is happening there.
Grama Prakash had been continuously writing on social media about irregularities in the Kalamandalam. He mentioned that the early morning ‘Sadhakam’ for students had been eliminated and added that many people had been calling him to complain about bad choreography. Grama Prakash also emphasized his non-involvement in any of the issues happening in Kalamandalam.
